Two people have been charged over what police allege was an “elaborate” Facebook Marketplace scam to steal a high-end designer handbag worth thousands of dollars.
The bag was up for sale online in Melbourne last month when the alleged sham robbery took place.

Police claim a woman organised to meet the seller and asked to inspect the bag, at which point a man approached her, assaulted her and stole the bag.

But, it’s alleged, the 28-year-old Broadmeadows man and 21-year-old Gladstone Park woman already knew each other and had set the whole thing up beforehand.

They split the profits when they sold the bag later, police alleged overnight.

Both were charged with perjury, theft and handling stolen goods while the man was also accused of one count of obtaining property by deception.

They were bailed to face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 9 October.
