CHICAGO: So, there’s been quite a stir in the court system lately. A judge named Thomas E. Nowinski has been reassigned after some serious backlash. He was handling domestic violence cases but got moved to deal with misdemeanors and traffic stuff instead.
This all started when he let a guy named Constantin Beldie go free. Just days later, Beldie fatally stabbed his estranged wife. Then, there was another case where a guy named Crosetti Brand, who was also released, went on to stab his ex-girlfriend’s son. It’s pretty shocking, right?

A lot of folks, including domestic violence advocates, were not happy with Nowinski’s decisions. They even gathered over 1,100 signatures to push for his reassignment. Amanda Pyron, who leads a coalition of these advocates, said they support the move and want to see better protections for victims.
Nowinski had claimed Beldie didn’t have a history of domestic violence, which is why he let him go. But prosecutors pointed out some pretty alarming details about Beldie’s past behavior that were overlooked.
The Cook County Chief Judge, Timothy C. Evans, criticized the prosecutors for not presenting a strong enough case to keep Beldie detained. He’s also looking into ways to improve the system to better protect survivors of domestic violence.
This whole situation has sparked a lot of discussions about how to handle these cases better. With more tragic incidents happening, it’s clear that changes are needed to ensure safety for everyone involved.
