Netflix fans have hailed a ‘hidden gem’ series which boasts a 100 per cent Rotten Tomatoes rating – as viewers eagerly await the second season. The Law According to Lidia Poet is based on the true story of Italy ‘s first female lawyer who investigates homicides while battling sexism in the 19th century.
The six-part crime series, which first premiered in February 2023, has been flooded with positive feedback on social media since its release. Dozens have branded it as ‘excellent’ and a ‘hidden gem’ as others urged viewers to tune in ahead of series two. The show’s teaser features Lidia (played by Matilda De Angelis) introducing herself to viewers by stating: ‘I’m a lawyer. ‘If you know me, you know I’m not allowed to argue in the courtroom because I am a woman.’
The series then documents her life as she battles to overcome the sexist limitations that are holding her back from pursuing her career after being ‘forbidden to work on cases.’ But, nonetheless, Lidia still manages to investigate her fair share of gruesome deaths while also navigating her own newfound love with Jacopo Barberis (Eduardo Scarpetta). And it seems that the no-nonsense protagonist has been captivating viewers as many rushed to social media to gush over the streaming series.
In a Reddit thread asking for ‘hidden gem’ recommendations, one avid fan wrote: ‘If you don’t mind subtitles, The Law According to Lidia Poet is excellent. It’s based on the life of Italy’s first female lawyer. ‘Only the first season (six episodes) are available at the moment, but a second season will be released in the spring.’ And another person replied: ‘Loved the show.’
Elsewhere, one viewer asked Facebook: ‘Who’s watching The Law According to Lidia Poet?’ She was quickly flooded with responses as one wrote : ‘On episode three. Absolutely loving the clothes.’
Another person said: ‘Yes!! I am really enjoying it,’ before somebody else replied: ‘She is stunning and the costumes enhance her beauty. Love her tenacity.’ A fourth viewer added: ‘I really liked it… finished it,’ and another commenter responded: ‘I am liking it too.’
‘Not usually a fan of dubbed shows… but this is good.’ The series has received 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes ‘ ‘average tomatometer’ and 89 per cent on its average audience score.
Many viewers took the site to once again hail the series. One person gave the show a five-star-rating and wrote: ‘I absolutely LOVED it. This mini series is funny, heartwarming, romantic, and light. I changed the language to English and quickly got used to it. ‘I loved all the main characters. The stories were entertaining and light. And I was surprised that it’s based on the first woman Lawyer in Italy. Highly recommended if you like murder mysteries and romance.’
A second person, who also gave the show five stars, added: ‘Very funny series. Obviously very fiction [based] compared to history, but that doesn’t bother me because I’d watch a documentary if I wanted historical accuracy. ‘The cast had a great ensemble performance and loved the tension and understanding between characters.’
