A high-stakes poker game in Perth’s north has been busted during a crackdown on alleged illegal gambling across Western Australia.

The raid, conducted in April, led to the seizure of nearly $3000 in cash and uncovered an additional $13,000 ready for electronic transfer.

“This was an operation that we allege was aimed at the organiser making money out of the operations,” Police Minister Paul Papalia said.

Authorities say the professional business was unlawful and operated without the appropriate certificates or approvals.

“The unlawful gaming venues that are targeted are not harmless social gambling nights,” Gaming and Wagering Commission chair Gary Dreibergs said.

“They can be well-organised underground events that may attract criminal gangs, money launderers, and people who have been banned from the casino for various reasons.”

While this particular game had no apparent links to organised crime, it is alleged it was targeting vulnerable players.

The event organiser’s gaming certificate, along with those of the two card dealers involved, has been revoked. They are likely to face potential charges.

The eight players present during the raid were fined.

This raid is part of an ongoing statewide effort to combat illegal gambling.

In the past 12 months, authorities have seized around $190,000 in three separate raids, and have warned there will be more to come.
