Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in a Manhattan federal courtroom on May 5 as jury selection began in his sex trafficking trial. The music mogul faces multiple federal charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for purposes of prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty.
According to PEOPLE and Reuters, over 600 potential jurors were screened as Combs, dressed in a blue blazer and visibly graying, requested a bathroom break during the session. His request was initially denied, but after he told U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, “I’m sorry, your honor, I’m a little nervous today,” the judge granted him a short recess.
Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, was indicted in September 2024 by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. The charges involve alleged “freak offs,” described by prosecutors as elaborate, choreographed sex events involving coerced women and male sex workers, which they claim Combs orchestrated. His legal team has asserted that the encounters were entirely consensual.
The trial is also expected to feature high-profile testimony. Cassie Ventura, Combs’ former partner, is anticipated to take the stand. Prosecutors have referenced hotel surveillance footage from Los Angeles that reportedly shows Combs assaulting Ventura.
Jurors were asked if they recognized names on a lengthy list that included celebrities such as Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Mike Myers, and Michael B. Jordan. It remains unclear how these figures are connected to the case or if they will testify.
He has remained in custody at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since his arrest. If convicted, Combs could face life in prison.
