Furious local leaves nasty note for champion ironwoman accusing her of hogging a set of stairs while exercising in a beachside park

  • A snarky sign aimed at Hayley Bateup has been posted on public stairs
  • Mystery person accuses the iron woman of hogging the stairs during workouts
  • Bateup claps back and says she ‘always considers the public’

A snarky local has taken petty to the next level by mocking champion ironwoman Hayley Bateup’s personal training business.

A sarcastic sign has been posted at the Gold Coast‘s Currumbin Alley stairs accusing Bateup of ‘owning’ them.

The steep set of stairs are used by hundreds of runners and walkers daily and Bateup, along with wife April Zedkulich, uses them as part of her women’s fitness business which operates in the beachside park, reports The Courier-Mail.

However one snarky local has objected to the practice, suggesting Ms Bateup’s group is hogging them.

‘Notice to people intending to use these steps for exercise – HAYLEY BATEUP OWNS THEM,’ the sign reads.

‘Please limit your use of said steps to times when Mr (sic) Bateup is not there. Narcissistic traits will become evident with noncompliance.’

A photo of the sign was posted on the Currumbin community Facebook page on Thursday and sparked a fiery response from many who jumped to Bateup’s defence.

‘Oh how pathetic – as someone who trains with Hayley I personally know that firstly she is a registered paying customer of the Gold Coast council to use their grounds and contribute on its maintenance,’ wrote local Julie Marshall.

‘Secondly we rarely use these stairs…. Thirdly Hayley is the most caring courteous trainer who is mindful of other people training always insisting we move to the right, runner ahead, bike behind in everywhere we go which has been great as it’s made me more aware of other exercisers and finally why would someone bother doing this.

‘If you have an issue with what you have seen or she’s done call her to discuss rather then dramatising on a platform to get the keyboard warriors out.’

Another local David Simons wrote: ‘The thing is that Hayley has been training those stairs for 30 years.

‘The blow-in trainers are the problem, taking over the (picnic) shelters.

‘Hayley is a local hero who provides a much wanted service.’

Another commenter suggested the sign was the work of a rival personal trainer who deliberately referred to Bateup as ‘Mr’ despite the fact she is female.

‘Would I be wrong to deduce that another trainer is having a dig at Hayley Bateup and calling her a narcissist? Ok, that’s all very funny and clever BUT calling her a he is out of order. A retraction is in order here!’ they wrote.

However another woman said she had trained in the park with friends – ‘just a bunch of mums trying to get fit’ – and ‘she (Ms Bateup) practically had her group sit on top of us’.

But Bateup, who is also a firefighter, had the final word, laughing off the passive-aggressive sign, saying: ‘So funny, I hardly even use the stairs. We actually pay the council to train there but always consider the public.

‘I actually find this really funny as I wasn’t even there (when the sign was erected). Would be nice if they came to me about this.’
