A 30-year-old Brazilian alleged drug lord who avoided arrest by using a helicopter to flee from farm in Paraguay is known for flaunting his wealth on social media.

Antônio Mota has been on the run since June 30, a day before authorities raided the property that lies on the Paraguayan border city of Pedro Juan Caballero and the Brazilian town of Ponte Porä.

Mota, who prefers to be called ‘Don’ and patterned himself after the Corleone family in The Godfather, allegedly controls parts of the drug trafficking corridor at the Brazil-Paraguay border, bringing in cocaine from Colombia and Bolivia.

The fugitive, however, lived a different life according to his social media channels, sharing his affinity for luxury watches and fine wine, jet setting trips across world and partying on yachts.

His girlfriend, a social media influencer whose name was omitted in the Brazilian media, was also know for flaunting Mota’s riches on her social media accounts.

Brazil’s Federal Police interrogated Mota’s bodyguard, Iuri da Silva, who confessed that law enforcement contacts in Paraguay warned Mota about the operation to apprehend him.

‘He said he would be in a risky situation, we would have to withdraw,’ da Silva said.

A helicopter landed on an airstrip on the family farm and whisked him and three other bodyguards away. 

Authorities arrested at least eight members of a militia, including an active military police officer and a reserve military police officer, that protected him. 

The three mercenaries who escaped with Mota – one Italian, one Romanian and one Greek – had fought in the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and against Somali pirates.

Police confiscated six grenades, three rifles, four pistols, three revolvers and 40 boxes of ammunition and a bulletproof vest.

Mota also avoided being arrested in May at another family farm in Pedro Juan Caballero, fleeing two days before cops showed up. 

The took place after authorities in Brazil accused him of providing trafficking cocaine to criminal group at home and abroad.

During that operation, police were able to seize the property, cars and helicopters, which had a combined worth of $6.1 million.

Police records obtained by Brazilian news outlet G1 from a November 2019 operation that led to the arrests of Mota and his parents, Antônio da Mota and Cecy Mota, showed that the drug lord employed two women, one in Paraguay and another in Brazil, to administer the criminal organization’s finances, using different bank accounts and shell companies to avoid any suspicions.

According to text messages from a phone that was confiscated, Antônio Mota had one of his operators wire about $6,550 for two prostitutes to spend the weekend with him.

In another conversation, he instructed his brother-in-law to split the payment of $20,000 for two luxury watches his gifted his girlfriend so that the transaction would not be tracked.

On another occasion, a plastic surgery for his mother was paid through separate cash deposits and money that was wire from a shell company.

Police also found that Mota once had his brother-in-law purchase a luxury vehicle on his behalf for $80,000.

According to Ponte Porã prosecutor Alexandre Aparizi, the third generation family’s riches derive from trafficking drugs and smuggling goods between Paraguy and Brazil.

‘If you look at the history of drug trafficking, if the big drug dealers, the big names, if they weren’t from the region, they passed through there,’ Aparizi said.
