Gary Neville has proved he’s still a red – as he appeared alongside Sir Keir Starmer in a Labour general election broadcast tonight.

The former Manchester United footballer joined the Labour leader for a walk in the Lake District as they discussed Sir Keir’s plans for power.

The pair were filmed visiting Langdale Pikes, which is where Sir Keir used to spend summer holidays with his parents.

Neville, now a TV pundit and businessman, has been a fierce critic of the Tories in recent years and became a Labour Party member in 2022.

Later that same year, the ex-England international spoke alongside a seemingly starstruck Sir Keir on stage at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool.

During tonight’s election broadcast, Sir Keir vowed that Labour would ‘hit the ground running on day one’ if they win power on 4 July.

He promised his party would ‘deliver from the get go’ if they replace the Conservatives in government for the first time in 14 years.

Asked by Neville if he already had a team preparing for the prospect of him entering Downing Street, Sir Keir replied: ‘Yes.

‘I said “I don’t want you having a conversation on day one, I need you to deliver for me, so you need to be ready to deliver from the get go”.

‘So that’s the footing I’ve had them on.’

Sir Keir turned emotional as he reflected on what his late mother and father would think if they knew he was leading Labour through a general election campaign.

‘They’d be having a real moment, and so am I actually,’ he said.

‘If she was back here now… and I was in a race to be a candidate for the prime minister of the country, they’d be really proud.

‘It’d be a real incredible moment. It really would.’

Speaking ahead of the party election broadcast, which was due to be aired on ITV and BBC One this evening, Sir Keir said: ‘Seeing those same sites and cottages we so often visited on our family holidays was an emotional time for me.

‘It gave me pause for thought to remind me why I do this job. It made me think of my mum, a public servant in the NHS for so many years, and those like her across the country who so heavily count on it in the toughest moments.

‘But most of all, it was a reminder of the millions across the country who desperately need a Labour government to rebuild Britain.’

Neville said: ‘It was a privilege to spend the morning with Keir filming this in the beautiful Lake District, he is a future prime minister who the country can believe in and trust.

‘It’s in your hands. You have the power to make change happen. Vote Labour.’
