People in Generation Z have reported that they are now going to bed by 9pm so they can have a full nine hours of sleep. 

A bar in New York City has also hopped on the nightly trend as they held their recent New Year’s Eve countdown at 8pm so drinkers could get settled in bed by 11pm. 

Those between the ages of 18 to 35 have said that they have noticed a direct link between sleep and overall health when they get the proper amount of sleep at night. 

Emma Kraft, 19, and Madelyn Sugg, 25, have both gone on to adopt earlier night routines and found that it has benefited their lives.

‘All of a sudden, it’s so much cooler and way more accepted to sleep early, and everyone has just adapted,’ Kraft said.

The Wall Street Journal reported that an analysis conducted by Sleep Number smart-bed customers revealed that people between the ages of 18 and 34 went to sleep, on average, by 10.06pm in January of this year. Last year, they got to sleep by 10.18pm. 

Kraft, a junior at the University of California, Berkley, said that even as she slept in a crowded sorority house full of 65 other women in her sophomore year, she still made sure she got her sleep. 

‘For me, nothing good happens after 9 p.m.,’ she told The Wall Street Journal. 

Since her rewarding sleep schedule change, where she sees herself in bed every night by 9.30pm, Kraft said that many of her friends have gone on to ask her for guidance on how they can do the same. 

As they’ve slept more, a recent study found that Gen-Z members have gone on to prefer drinking less than previous generations, according to Cleveland Clinic

Though it is unclear why the generation has enjoyed less drinks, Dr. Akhil Anand, an addiction psychiatrist said that there could be many factors that play into the decision. 

For one, Generation Z might have picked up on the fact that alcohol is a depressant that can effect people’s mental health. 

Dr. Anand said that presently, there is a huge mental health crisis taking place in the world and instead of drowning in alcohol to fulfill needs, Gen Z has ‘moved in a different direction.’ 

He also suggested that Gen-Z has shifted to smoking cannabis as a stress reduction method. 

Alcohol-free lifestyles also go hand-in-hand with better sleep patterns, weight loss, and increased energy.

Another girl, Madelyn Sugg, 25, started to go to bed earlier at night once she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in November. 

Sugg, who said that she used to barhop until the early morning has gone on to find happiness in early nights out. 

‘I was afraid of that feeling of FOMO or of feeling like I’m not succeeding at building a community, but it’s actually turned out to be an improvement in all these areas,’ Sugg admitted. 

The fictional-operations analyst said that she now prefers enjoying getting drinks with friends around 5pm every Thursday and seeing a jazz show at 6pm on Monday’s. 

On top of saving her a lot of stress, anxiety and tiredness from lack of sleep, Sugg also revealed that her bank account has also benefited from the change as she’s managed to avoid the costs of midnight snacks and drinks. 

Shorr said that on New Year’s Eve, the 1970s-style bar hosted their 2024 countdown at 8pm and had a waitlist for the event with more than 200 people on it. 

‘We order pizza for everyone, it peaks at 8 p.m., then everyone can still be in bed by 11,’ the owner said. 

In August, the New York Post reported that that a survey found that Gen Z prioritized sleep so much that they failed to complete other tasks before bed. 

The study concluded that the generations is ‘most likely to not finish their nighttime routine’ before bed, and that 68 percent in survey of 2,000 adults fell asleep with their phone in their hand. 

The study also revealed that 53 percent didn’t brush their teeth before bed, while 47 percent ended up dozing off while still in their day clothes.
