Heidi Firkus and Nick Firkus

Heidi Firkus Update — After a decade-long search for answers, justice was finally served when Nicholas Firkus received a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Heidi Firkus. The case had captured the nation’s attention and was recently highlighted in an ABC 20/20 special, shedding light on the tragic events that unfolded.

In 2010, Heidi Firkus was found murdered in her St. Paul residence. Initially, Nicholas Firkus had told the police and family that an intruder had broken into their home and shot his wife during a struggle over a shotgun. However, the police and prosecutors later discovered that Nicholas had fabricated this story to hide his involvement in the murder. As a result, Nicholas was charged with first-degree murder in 2021.

In February of the same year, Nicholas was found guilty of the crime by a jury, and he was subsequently sentenced by the court. At the sentencing, Heidi’s mother expressed the family’s anguish over the “false public narrative” created by Nicholas to conceal the truth of what happened to her daughter.

This case serves as a somber reminder of the profound impact that domestic violence and murder can have on families and communities.

Heidi Firkus Murder Update 2023

In April 2023, Nick Firkus received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of his first wife, Heidi Firkus, 13 years earlier. During the hearing, several of Heidi’s friends and family members gave heart-wrenching victim statements.

The tragic events unfolded in April 2010 when Heidi Firkus called 911 reporting a break-in at their home. The call ended abruptly after a gunshot. The police found Heidi dead, and Nick was wounded in the leg from a gunshot.

Nick Firkus told the investigators that he struggled with an intruder over a shotgun, which accidentally discharged and hit both him and his wife. However, there were inconsistencies in his story, and the investigators continued to look into his involvement in his wife’s death.

In May 2021, he was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder. The prosecutors argued that Nick killed his wife to avoid shame caused by their financial problems.

On February 10, he was found guilty of both charges by a jury.

After Heidi’s death, Nicholas remarried and had three children with Rachel before they divorced in 2019.

Despite his conviction, his father and some former friends maintain his innocence, citing evidence such as tool marks on the front door and a neighbor’s testimony about hearing two voices.

Meanwhile, a fundraiser has been launched to support Nicholas’s three children and Rachel, who have been among the most impacted by the tragedy.

As for Nicholas himself, he expressed in court that his “mind is tormented by traumas, both new and old and my body stands condemned to serve another man’s sentence,” but his “soul remains free of the guilt this imperfect world has bestowed upon me.”

Her friends described her as goofy and deep, someone who loved to have fun but was not afraid to be vulnerable and have honest conversations.

Heidi’s life was cut short when she was murdered in her St. Paul home. Her husband, Nicholas, initially told police and family that an intruder had broken in and shot her during a struggle over a shotgun.

However, police and prosecutors later determined that Nicholas had fabricated the story and charged him with first-degree murder in 2021.
