Happy St McGeorge’s Day? Blundering Keir Starmer is mocked after sharing video to celebrate England’s national day but including images of Scotland

Sir Keir Starmer has been mocked for sharing a video to celebrate St George’s Day – but including images of Scotland.

The blundering Labour leader posted the two minute-long clip to his social media accounts yesterday on England’s national day.

But eagle-eyed viewers quickly spotted how it featured iconic scenes from Glasgow.

Included in the video are images of the Finnieston Crane, which sits on the banks of the River Clyde in Scotland’s largest city.

This is then followed by a shot of Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, one of the city’s main shopping thoroughfares, from the top of the well-known Glasgow Royal Concert Hall steps.

The spot is often used by protestors and speakers on a variety of occasions throughout the year and sits next to the statue of Scotland’s inaugural first minister, Donald Dewar.

Earlier in the video there is also footage of high-rise flats in the town of Cambuslang, on the outskirts of Greater Glasgow.

Sir Keir posted the video yesterday with the message: ‘On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish everyone in England a very happy St George’s Day!’

But the Labour leader was quickly met with ridicule for his gaffe when viewers spotted the Scottish scenes.

One Twitter user said: ‘Why have you used footage of Scotland?’

Another added: ‘Where in England is the Finnieston Crane?’

A third replied: ‘Lot of Glasgow in your video about England there.’

A fourth joked: ‘Will you do one of these for St Andrew’s Day and slip in pictures of an English city?’

Another commented: ‘I know you would like Glasgow to be in England but I think you will find it is not despite featuring in your video.’

A sixth said: ‘These are both shots from Glasgow – notably not a part of England.

‘Maybe take these out and save them for your next patronising St Andrew’s Day video?’

As well as the mistaken scenes from Scotland, Sir Keir also included footage of his recent campaigning across England ahead of next month’s local elections.

He says in the video: ‘I’m on the road at the moment, that’s usual for this time of year.

‘Visiting towns, villages and cities right across England as part of our local election campaign.

‘Listening to your hopes and your concerns. I’ve been to Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and York in the North.

‘Swindon and Plymouth in the South. The six towns of Stoke-on-Trent somewhere in the middle.

‘And while, of course, I’m hearing about your challenges with the NHS, crime or this suffocating cost-of-living crisis, I’m also hearing everywhere in England our spirit.

‘A pride in our country and our communities that we can unlock to build a better future together.’
