Mysterious ‘warning’ letter to residents of a suburb where the median home costs $5.3million: ‘Give away your houses…and your wealth’

  • Letter being dropped in Toorak mail boxes
  • It asserts residents of suburb are too rich
  • They are told to give away houses and cars

Residents of a suburb synonymous with wealth are being urged to give away houses and cars or face dire consequences by a mysterious letter.

The letter, which has been left in mailboxes around Toorak, long known as Melbourne‘s south-east enclave for the well-off, has been posted on social media.

It begins by addressing the recipient as a ‘friend’ before expressing concern about the ‘damage you’re doing society’.

‘You’re too wealthy, and that’s harming a lot of people,’ the letter states.

‘Millions of people are struggling to pay their rents, mortgages, energy bills and to afford healthy food. They don’t have enough because you and others like you have too much.

‘For things to improve for people who don’t have enough, some of your wealth must go to them.’

\Toorak’s median house price is a staggering $5,300,000, with the suburb having the highest average household income in Victoria of $185,000, according to Australian Tax Office figures for 2019/20.

The letter claims that if Toorak’s rich do nothing about inequality, ‘you put us all in danger’.

‘The more you have, the less there is for others and at the moment, you’re taking more than your fair share,’ the letter accuses.

It claims ‘history teaches’ inequality ‘breeds resentment and anger’, which could ‘boil over into unrest and violence’ and ‘endanger every one of us’.

‘As someone who’s causing inequality, you have the means and the responsibility to fix it,’ the letter urges.

‘You can do this by giving away a substantial portion of your wealth.’

The letter explains that for Toorak residents to ‘keep us all safe’ they must ‘give away the assets which you don’t need to people who do need them’.

‘Give any investment properties you to the people currently renting them or to other long-term renters,’ the letter urges.

It also calls for a similar measure with holiday homes claiming these two measures will help make ‘housing more affordable for everyone’.

The letter also demands that households that have more cars than licensed drivers, give away the ‘extra’ cars.

‘This isn’t all you should do, but it is where you should start. Right now. For everyone’s sake,’ the letter concludes.

It signs off as being from ‘concerned friends’.

The letter did not meet with much approval from Twitter users.

‘Commie freeloading, they’re good-for-nothing… They’re everywhere! They think the world owes them!’ one vented.

‘They could report it to the police, intimidation, stalking, harassment… etc a friend just forwarded it to me,’ another suggested.

However, some wondered if the letter was a hoax.

‘Anybody could have produced this, and no proof of it being delivered,’ one Twitter user said.

A number of Twitter users claimed they had received the letter from friends in Toorak.
