Robert Downey Jr.’s shocking casting as Doctor Doom in the newly announced Avengers: Doomsday has left fans with a bittersweet feeling.
Many are thrilled to see the former Iron Man actor return to the MCU, but others are questioning the decision.
Downey Jr. was revealed as the actor playing Doctor Doom in a surprising announcement at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H.
During the presentation, the Russo brothers announced that Downey would be playing Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers 5 now titled as Avengers:Doomsday.
However, there are rumblings that he might actually reprise his role as Tony Stark in the MCU.
In the comics, Stark and Doom have switched places before, which has led many to believe that Avengers: Doomsday could feature an evil variant of Stark.
This has disappointed some fans, as Stark’s return could undermine his sacrifice in Endgame and spoil his death in the 2019 movie.
MCU fans took to social media to express their disappointment over the casting decision.
A user posted on X, “I don’t even have words but the way the MCU has completely reduced itself to cash-grabs and nostalgia with no sense of creativity has to be studied.”
A second fan posted bashing MCU, “I get it’s multiversity and blah blah blah, but Iron Man being Doctor Doom means absolutely nothing to the MCU as we know it and does nothing for the character Doctor Doom.”
“It’s just to sell tickets. It’s boring, disrespectful to my fave, and doesn’t make sense. Next’”
Another one wrote, “tears in my eyes. we are never getting a good adaptation of the best comic book villain ever.”
A different X user vented his rage,” I like how Kevin Feige wants the MCU to last for several decades yet he wastes the most iconic Marvel villain of all time on something you would find on DeviantArt 14 years ago.”
