A B.C. First Nations leader now supports the Northern Gateway pipeline amid concerns over U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports

Vancouver: So, here’s the scoop. The president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Stewart Phillip, has flipped his stance on the Northern Gateway pipeline. He used to be totally against it, but now he’s saying it’s time to rethink things.
He mentioned that back when the project was scrapped in 2016, it was a different ball game. Now, with all the chatter about U.S. tariffs from Trump, he feels Canada has to reconsider building that pipeline.
Phillip is worried that if Canada doesn’t step up and build the necessary infrastructure, Trump might just go ahead and do it without caring about the environment or laws.
He’s in Vancouver for a meeting with B.C.’s provincial cabinet and First Nations leaders. They’re planning to discuss how to tackle Trump’s tariff threats together.
Phillip and other leaders want to be included in any “Team Canada” strategy when dealing with the U.S. But so far, no one has reached out to Indigenous communities for collaboration.
