Reform sensationally seized Runcorn and Helsby from Labour by just six votes, in the narrowest by-election win in modern British history.

Nigel Farage’s party is also expected to gain hundreds of councillors across England, with both the Tories and Labour braced for a battering.

Polls were held in 23 areas across England to elect more than 1,600 new councillors, while six mayoral contests also took place.

Runcorn and Helsby was the only constituency selecting a new MP. The by-election happened because Labour’s Mike Amesbury stood down after punching a constituent.  He received a 10-week prison sentence that was suspended after an appeal.
