Mélanie Joly will discuss her recent meetings with U.S. politicians regarding tariffs and trade issues affecting Canada.

Washington: So, Mélanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, is set to share some news today about her talks in Washington. She’s been chatting with U.S. politicians about those pesky tariffs that could hit Canada hard. She met with a mix of Republicans and Democrats, including some big names like Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senators Lindsay Graham and Jeanne Shaheen. It’s all happening just before Trump steps into office, and he’s been pretty vocal about slapping a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico.
Jonathan Wilkinson, the Energy Minister, was also in D.C. this week. He mentioned that even the Republicans seem a bit confused about what Trump’s tariff plans really are.
Back in Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a sit-down with the premiers to figure out how Canada should respond to this tariff threat.
Joly also caught up with outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who she’s worked with on global issues like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. It’s a busy time for her, that’s for sure!
