Louisville: Right now, only medical marijuana is legal in Kentucky, but that might change soon. If voters get the chance, they could decide on some new laws.
This year, the Kentucky General Assembly is looking at a couple of bills that would allow folks to grow marijuana for personal use. Sounds interesting, right?
One of the bills, Senate Bill 36, aims to change the state constitution. If it passes, it would let people 21 and older possess, use, buy, or sell up to an ounce of cannabis. Plus, they could grow up to five plants for personal use. Senator David Yates from Louisville is behind this bill.
There’s also House Bill 105, which has similar goals and language. It’s sponsored by Representative Nima Kulkarni, also from Louisville. Both bills would put the question on the ballot for voters to decide.
Just to give you some context, Kentucky recently passed a law to legalize medical marijuana, which will kick in on January 1, 2025. So, things are definitely moving in that direction.
There are more bills in the works too, like Senate Bill 33, which aims to decriminalize marijuana possession. It looks like Kentucky is really starting to rethink its cannabis laws.
