Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana missed the whole of last season because of injury.

As a result, Wesley Fofana did not play a single minute of football under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine has now been replaced by Enzo Maresca, who was named as the new Chelsea manager last week.

Before his departure, though, Pochettino said he was hopeful of having Fofana back for pre-season.

It now looks like his successor could have the central defender available.

When could Wesley Fofana return?

In a major boost for Chelsea, the Blues could very well have Fofana back for pre-season.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, the player himself is confident that he will be back by then.

It also claims that Fofana is planning to return to “light group training” next month.

While Maresca could have the 23-year-old for pre-season, he may lose Trevoh Chalobah.

The Chelsea academy graduate is reportedly attracting interest from Fulham, who just watched Tosin Adarabioyo join their west London rivals.

Wesley Fofana needs a good pre-season

Fofana obviously needs pre-season to build up his match fitness and sharpness again after being out for so long.

But it also gives him the chance to impress a new manager who has several central defenders to choose from.

On top of the Frenchman, Maresca also has Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill to call upon.

And if Chalobah ends up remaining at Stamford Bridge this summer, that is another centre-half.

Of course, you would still expect the 24-year-old to depart, especially after the arrival of Adarabioyo.

Whatever happens, Maresca is going to have options in central defence in the new season, which means a lot of competition. Fofana, then, needs a solid pre-season. However, with an injury record like his, there will be concerns over whether he will actually get that. After so long on the sidelines, hopefully he does.
