Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have been drawn into Group B of the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket, alongside reigning champions Tunisia, perennial contenders Cameroon, and Madagascar.
The 31st edition of Africa’s premier basketball championship will take place from August 12 to 24, across Luanda and Namibe in Angola.
A Challenging Group for 2015 Champions
The draw, held on Friday in Luanda, was conducted using FIBA’s world ranking-based seeding system and featured several African basketball legends in attendance.
Group B Overview:
Tunisia – Three-time AfroBasket champions and title holders; defeated Nigeria in the 2017 final
Cameroon – 2007 runners-up; potential inclusion of NBA star Pascal Siakam remains uncertain
Madagascar – Making their fourth AfroBasket appearance; best finish was ninth in 1972
Nigeria – One-time champions (2015); last appearance in 2021 ended with a shock defeat to Uganda in the Round of 16
Tournament Format and Venues
The 2025 edition will feature 16 teams split into four groups, with matches in the group stage taking place in:
Namibe – Hosts group phase matches only
Luanda – Hosts select group games and all knockout phase fixtures
D’Tigers Seeking Redemption
After a disappointing exit in the pre-quarterfinals of the 2021 AfroBasket, D’Tigers will be eager to make a strong comeback in Angola under a yet-to-be-confirmed coaching setup.
