Alan Shearer has taken a swipe at Chelsea by claiming their squad is still lacking in a few key areas despite the investment in recent years.
Even though there’s a lot of talent in the expensively assembled Chelsea squad, the results on the pitch are still pretty inconsistent.
The Blues are sliding down the Premier League table at a rapid rate after three defeats in their previous four top-flight matches.
Blues co-owner Todd Boehly wants experience in Chelsea’s squad as he feels there should be a blend of youth and know-how in the dressing room. Interestingly, head coach Enzo Maresca is very happy with Chelsea’s group.

Alan Shearer says Chelsea lack a goalkeeper, centre-back and striker
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has labelled Chelsea as “weird” because he thinks their recruitment has still left them with a few major holes to fill.
He feels that the Blues need significant upgrades at goalkeeper and striker, plus he’s not convinced by the centre-back spot.
During a discussion about Chelsea on The Rest Is Football, Shearer said: “I have to say they’ve spent all that money, a billion quid. They still haven’t got a top-class goalkeeper. They still haven’t got a top-class centre-forward. And I would say, I’m not sure about a regular centre-half either. Weird.”
If Shearer hears Chelsea’s summer transfer plan, he may be quite impressed. Apparently, Maresca’s side will ‘go big’ to sign a new goalkeeper, centre-back and striker ahead of the 2025/26 season.
It feels like the team is a long way off the very best teams around right now, but perhaps they’re only missing a few pieces of the puzzle.

The three signings Chelsea should make to improve spine
In terms of the goalkeeper position at Stamford Bridge, it’s obvious that they need to find an upgrade. Both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen are failing to convince anyone when they play in-between the sticks for Chelsea.
Player | Appearances | Goals conceded | Clean sheets |
Robert Sanchez | 22 | 29 | 4 |
Filip Jorgensen | 16 | 18 | 5 |
Chelsea admire Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, who’s a quality Premier League goalkeeper who would improve the starting XI next season.
It’s been heavily speculated that Chelsea want Marc Guehi as they plan to try sign the Crystal Palace and England central defender in the summer. Without a doubt, the centre-half would add leadership and much-needed quality to the Blues backline.
Finally, Ipswich Town centre-forward Liam Delap could be a fascinating addition if it happens. Chelsea are frontrunners to sign Delap, who’s scored 10 Premier League goals and counting this season.
