Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery after sustaining a serious abdominal injury in Sunday’s 2 2 Premier League draw with Leicester City at the City Ground.

The 27 year old Nigerian forward collided with the goalpost in the 88th minute of the match while attempting to meet a cross from Anthony Elanga.

Awoniyi, who had only been on the pitch for five minutes after coming on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangaré, received immediate treatment on the field following the incident.

Though he managed to continue playing briefly after the restart, Awoniyi was visibly struggling, raising concerns over the severity of the injury.

Nottingham Forest issued a statement on Tuesday morning regarding his injury.

“The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the statement read. “Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo.”

Since joining Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin, Awoniyi’s career has been marred by injuries.

The forward has struggled with fitness issues, making just 400 minutes of Premier League appearances this season.
