The Bears are focused on setting up Caleb Williams for success by hiring Ben Johnson as their new head coach
Chicago: The Bears really struggled last offseason to set up Caleb Williams for success, and it ended with their head coach and offensive coordinator getting the boot by December.
This time around, they’re determined to find the right head coach to help the former No. 1 pick shine. They’ve settled on Ben Johnson, the Lions’ offensive coordinator, and are wrapping up a deal with him.
Williams has to be excited about this. Johnson just led the league with an impressive 33.2 points per game and turned Jared Goff into a standout quarterback during his time with the Lions, despite their playoff loss.
Earlier this year, Williams couldn’t stop praising Johnson after watching the Lions beat the Vikings. He mentioned how Johnson knows how to read defenses and execute plays effectively.
Williams even got pranked during the coaching search when he agreed to a FaceTime meeting with someone pretending to be Johnson. Talk about a funny mix-up!
Johnson has openly admired Williams’ potential, which likely helped the Bears land him, especially since the Raiders could have offered more control. But the Raiders don’t have a solid long-term quarterback option.
Before meeting with the Bears, Johnson praised Williams, saying he’s got a strong arm and can extend plays. Now, he’ll get to work closely with him and see his talent up close.
