Chelsea’s route into next season’s Champions League has just become a bit tougher after losing against Newcastle United.

The Blues were beaten 2-0 away to Newcastle in Sunday’s fixture in the Premier League. Incidentally, it’s the seventh time they’ve lost away from home in the league this campaign.

Nicolas Jackson’s red card in the first half for an elbow on Sven Botman now means he’ll miss the rest of the league season. Perhaps it’s no surprise that Blues head coach Enzo Maresca didn’t look at Nicolas Jackson as he walked off the pitch after his dismissal.

A piece of good news is that Chelsea finish the weekend still inside the top five because of Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City.

Maresca’s side still have it in their hands to qualify for the Champions League going into their final two league fixtures against Manchester United (home) and Nottingham Forest (away).

Chelsea fans thought Levi Colwill was a major positive against Newcastle

Even though it was a disappointing result for Chelsea at St James’ Park, they did put in a spirited effort after they were reduced to 10 men.

A selection of Blues supporters on social media picked out Levi Colwill, 22, for massive praise after his individual effort in defence.

In fact, Chelsea fans on X agreed it was one of the centre-back’s best performance in a while.

One fan wrote: “Best Colwill performance of the season.”

Better from Colwill today,” another posted

One supporter claimed: “Colwill has been really good.”

“Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah have both stepped up massively these last few weeks. True leaders on the pitch. It’s been a joy to watch,” another said.

Even though Colwill was involved in some needless confrontations at the end, the central defender certainly put in an eye-catching performance at the back. In fact, like the supporters, we feel he’s stepped up his levels recently after an up-and-down season.

Levi Colwill wants to be Chelsea captain and these types of performances at the back certainly help his case.

It’s not been a faultless campaign for the 22-year-old Englishman, but he proved against Newcastle he’s capable of defending his penalty box superbly well.

Levi Colwill stats vs Newcastle

The eye test told you that Colwill was one of Chelsea’s better performers on a day to forget at Newcastle.

In fairness, the statistics highlighted a decent individual effort from the centre-half.

The partnership between Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah recently has definitely shown promise. However, Chelsea’s summer transfer plan includes bringing in a new central defender.
