Chelsea could turn to the free agent market to strengthen their midfield this summer.
Midfield is already a strong area for Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca possessing Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.
Andrey Santos is likely to return to the club, while the Blues have also agreed to sign Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon. Essugo is expected to remain at Chelsea, too.
Even so, Chelsea appear to be looking at another midfielder, who could cost them nothing in the next transfer window.
Chelsea hold talks to sign Napoli’s Frank Anguissa
Frank Anguissa is out of contract at Napoli this summer, and it looks like Chelsea could end up signing him.
According to Il Mattino, the Blues have already held more than one round of talks in their bid to land the 29-year-old.
Anguissa is likely to be open to the move, with the same outlet claiming that Chelsea believe he will see it as a chance at “redemption” in the Premier League.
The Cameroonian has previously played for Chelsea’s west London rivals Fulham but did not enjoy his time there, seeing relegation with the club in his first season at Craven Cottage.
Things have got much better for Anguissa at Napoli, though. He helped the Italian outfit to win the 2022/23 Serie A title and could do the same thing this term.
If he stays at Napoli instead of joining Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas could be his next manager. It has been claimed that Fabregas could succeed Antonio Conte at Napoli should the Italian depart at the end of the campaign.
Frank Anguissa’s stats this season
Anguissa has certainly played his part in Napoli’s title charge. In total, the Cameroon international has made 32 appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists across those games.
He has been a midfielder who has got in the box and not been afraid to receive the ball. For example, the former Fulham man is taking 2.14 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, which is a lot for a player in his position.

Again, Chelsea are making plans with Santos and Essugo, so there really is no need for another midfielder. For whatever reason, though, Anguissa apparently remains an option.
