Chelsea are persisting with their transfer interest this month in a Premier League forward.
There are already several different strikers linked with Chelsea in the January window so far.
For example, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel is attracting interest from the Blues this week. Apparently, Chelsea have made an enquiry for Bayern striker Tel, who’s going to cost in excess of £40m.
It turns out that Enzo Maresca’s side still has a Premier League star in their sights, though.
Chelsea approach Liam Delap’s agent for the second time in January
Respected journalist Simon Phillips has claimed via his Substack on Tuesday morning that Chelsea have now approached the agents of Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap for the second time in the current January transfer window.
It is explained that the Blues have been seriously considering trying to sign the 21-year-old Premier League striker this month.
Phillips adds that Ipswich insists the English frontman isn’t available in the mid-season window. However, Delap himself is ‘keen’ on the move to Stamford Bridge.
Delap is proving his quality this season for a relegation-threatened Ipswich side, scoring eight goals in 19 Premier League games. In fact, he’s an in-form player right now after scoring in back-to-back games over Chelsea and Fulham.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca described Delap as “fantastic” last month, suggesting that he could even be a solution for England’s senior national team.
Could Liam Delap be the new Diego Costa?
Chelsea fans recently compared Delap to Diego Costa, so could the Ipswich frontman be the heir to the throne of the former Blues striker?
Costa enjoyed a purple patch at Chelsea between 2014-2017, scoring 59 goals in 120 appearances for the club. On top of his goals and two Premier League titles, he played with an aggression and hunger in attack that endeared himself to the Blues fanbase.
Even though Delap is only 21, there’s certainly shades of Costa in his game with his fight and desire on the football pitch.
The Ipswich striker does look like the complete package with his performances in the top division, so it feels like a matter of time before a big move comes around. If Chelsea do get him, fans should be excited about him challenging Nicolas Jackson for the No.9 position.
