Chelsea are looking at a number of different left-backs as potential transfer targets.
When you examine the current Chelsea squad, Marc Cucurella is the clear number one option at left-back.
Renato Veiga has been an understudy at full-back in the first half of the season, although there’s wide speculation about him possibly leaving in the January transfer window.
On top of that, Ben Chilwell is a left-back option who’s been frozen out under Enzo Maresca. Chelsea boss Maresca admits he feels ‘shame’ about the Chilwell situation.
Therefore, it might not be the biggest surprise to see that the Blues are setting their sights on a number of quality left-backs in the transfer market.
Chelsea have five-man left-back shortlist
Respected journalist Simon Phillips has claimed via Substack on Wednesday morning that Chelsea are looking at signing a new left-back.
Apparently, it’s likely that the Blues will wait until the summer to add a new full-back as their priorities in January lie elsewhere.
Phillips has named the five players he’s heard that are being considered by Chelsea right now on their five-man shortlist for the left-back spot.
- Milos Kerkez [Bournemouth]
- Nuno Mendes [PSG]
- Bradley Locko [Brest]
- Antonee Robinson [Fulham]
- Patrick Dorgu [Lecce]
Chelsea have been scouting Fulham defender Antonee Robinson as he enjoys a superb season at Craven Cottage. In 21 Premier League appearances this campaign, the energetic left-back has registered nine assists.
In addition, Chelsea have been monitoring Leece’s £42m-rated defender Patrick Dorgu, but he’s receiving strong interest from Manchester United as well.
Marc Cucurella vs Antonee Robinson
It’s a super impressive list of five quality left-backs on Chelsea’s radar. In particular, Robinson’s performances across the road at neighbours Fulham make it seem inevitable that he’ll earn a big transfer in the near future.
It makes for very interesting reading when you compare Robinson with Cucurella in the campaign so far.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Pass completion | Crosses | Tackles | Interceptions | Yellow cards |
Antonee Robinson | 21 | 0 | 9 | 76.0% | 103 | 57 | 41 | 4 |
Marc Cucurella | 19 | 1 | 1 | 89.1% | 19 | 28 | 15 | 8 |
The role that Cucurella plays in and out of possession for Chelsea makes him such a vital part of their team. In fairness, he’s been extremely consistency for around 12 months now as well.
If the Blues do bring in a new full-back, he’ll need the versatility to play different roles and receive the ball in all areas of the pitch.
