Chelsea could try to raid Premier League rivals Liverpool this month as they look to strengthen their squad.
Chelsea‘s focus in the transfer window has likely turned to attack after their decision to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace.
Enzo Maresca was arguably in need of another central defender after injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, and he has now got one following the return of Chalobah.
He could also need another forward if Christopher Nkunku leaves the club. Nkunku could join Bayern Munich now or during the summer.
Chelsea revive interest in Darwin Nunez
Before Darwin Nunez‘s move from Benfica to Liverpool back in 2022, it was thought that Chelsea also had an interest in the striker.
And according to journalist Simon Phillips, that interest did not go away after Nunez joined Liverpool.
Phillips has claimed on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Uruguayan was actually going to join the Blues from Liverpool, only for Jurgen Klopp to veto a deal over a year ago.
To the present day, and Phillips has shared that his top source is saying Chelsea have revived their interest in Nunez.
Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is another Premier League forward whom Chelsea are interested in. Chelsea have made two enquiries about Delap’s availability.
Chelsea would be mad to make a bid for Darwin Nunez
Nunez is appreciated by his Liverpool teammates. “Everyone has now seen the potential and the quality he has,” Virgil van Dijk was quoted as saying by The Athletic in 2023.
Simply put, though, Nunez misses too many chances. Last season, the 25-year-old scored 11 goals in 36 Premier League appearances, which is not the worst return, but he finished the campaign with an of xG 19.19 (via Understat).
The above shows how wasteful Nunez can be, while Nicolas Jackson is not the most clinical striker either, something everyone saw in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. You definitely do not want both players in the same squad.
With Liverpool going for the title as well, they will probably be reluctant to sell Nunez this month and reduce the size of their roster.
