You could argue that Enzo Fernandez is currently enjoying his best spell as a Chelsea player right now.
It’s coming up to two years for Enzo Fernandez since his high-profile move from Benfica to Chelsea, where he’s gone through a mix of ups and downs.
The 24-year-old central midfielder can operate in plenty of different roles in the centre of the park, whether that’s as a deep-lying playmaker or more offensively in a box-to-box role. In terms of this season, Fernandez has contributed three goals and eight assists in 25 games across all competitions.
Unfortunately, Fernandez is an injury doubt for Chelsea versus Wolverhampton Wanderers in Monday night’s Premier League fixture.
Enzo Maresca hails improvement in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca spoke very highly about midfield star Fernandez in yesterday’s pre-match press conference for Wolves. In particular, he claims that the Argentina international has really improved his understanding of the game since he started coaching him this season.
When discussing Chelsea midfielder Fernandez, Maresca said via Football.London: “He is understanding the game much better compared to at the beginning of the season. It is something normal when you start a new process because in the way we want him to play, it is a bit different to what he’s done in the past; not only here but two years ago, three years ago when he was in Portugal and Argentina.
“We were sure he was going to score goals, give assists and create chances. I think being even more clinical, he could score three or four more goals with three or four more chances. But we have no doubt that we are going to be there soon with Enzo and help the team.”
Ally McCoist claims Chelsea’s Fernandez looks “excellent” this season despite previously criticising him in the past. Elsewhere, Martin Keown said Fernandez looks “unrecognisable” at Chelsea.
It’s taken some time for the midfielder to truly find his feet in the Premier League, but he’s a massive offensive threat in Maresca’s current system. It helps when he’s got the support of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia behind him, too.
Enzo Fernandez tops midfielder statistics in the Premier League
One eye-catching statistic in the Premier League highlights that Chelsea’s midfield maestro is pulling the strings for them.
Interestingly, Fernandez has created more chances from open play than any other central midfielder so far in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Maresca is unlocking Fernandez’s potential by playing to his strengths with the ball at his feet. The statistics don’t show that the South American star is already growing into a real leader on the pitch, too.
It’s a hard job trying to shake off so much talk about a £100m-plus transfer cost, but he’s doing that week by week with his growing influence in the Blues XI.
