Newcastle United assistant manager Jason Tindall has proven to be quite a controversial figure in English football, and it was easy to see why in his side’s 2-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday.
During one stage of the match, Tindall clashed with Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, with both men managing to escape a yellow card in the end.
Despite that heated moment, Tindall would have been happy with how the afternoon went as a whole, but the same can obviously not be said about Cucurella and Chelsea.
Since the game’s conclusion, Enzo Maresca has spoken about that incident and why he never shook Tindall’s hand at the final whistle.
Enzo Maresca only needed to shake Eddie Howe’s hand after Chelsea’s defeat to Newcastle
Newcastle were able to win largely because of Nicolas Jackson’s sending off, which left Chelsea having to play the entire second half with just 10 men.
Eddie Howe spoke about Jackson’s dismissal in his post-match press conference, as did Maresca. The Chelsea boss also explained why he chose not to shake Tindall’s hand, while telling reporters to ask Cucurella about his clash with the Newcastle assistant.
“I don’t know, this is a question for Marc,” Maresca was quoted as saying by The Shields Gazette when asked what Tindall and Cucurella’s altercation was about.
On not shaking the 47-year-old’s hand, he then added: “I shake Eddie Howe’s hand. But I think this is enough.”
Chelsea are back in action on Friday, taking on Manchester United, so need to quickly put everything that happened at St James’ Park behind them.
While he expects them to beat United, Jamie Carragher thinks Chelsea will finish below fifth this season.
How Enzo Maresca reacted to Nicolas Jackson sending off
Understandably, Maresca is disappointed following the loss against Newcastle. With things being so tight in the race for Champions League qualification, the 45-year-old knows that defeat could prove costly.
Maresca’s eyes did not even meet Jackson as he headed down the tunnel after being shown red, showing his manager’s anger.
Jackson now needs his teammates to bail him out of trouble when they take on United later this week.
