Flying Eagles of Nigeria have advanced to the semifinals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Senegal.

The match, played at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, ended goalless after 120 minutes of tense football, with both teams failing to break the deadlock despite several opportunities.

The quarterfinal encounter was a tightly contested affair, with both teams putting up a resolute defence.

Nigeria dominated possession for long stretches, but Senegal’s backline stood firm, and goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho was in top form, pulling off several crucial saves to keep the Flying Eagles at bay.

On the other hand, Kparobo Arierhi and Divine Oliseh both forced strong saves from Sissokho, while Cheikh Thiam’s header in the first half came agonizingly close, striking the upright.

Despite Nigeria’s attacking pressure, the match remained deadlocked, heading into extra time, where neither side could find a breakthrough.

With penalties looming, Nigeria’s composure under pressure proved decisive.

Precious Benjamin, Israel Ayuma, and Emmanuel Chukwu all converted their spot kicks, while goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged as the hero.

Harcourt saved two of Senegal’s penalties and watched as another strike rattled the crossbar, securing Nigeria’s place in the semifinals.

This victory also guarantees Nigeria a spot at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, marking a major milestone for the seven-time African champions.

The Flying Eagles, under the guidance of coach Aliyu Zubairu, can now look ahead to their semifinal clash against South Africa.
