Gus Williams, the iconic NBA player who led the Sonics to their only title, has died at 71, leaving behind a legacy of speed and skill.

He was a fan favorite, and his last public appearance was at a Mariners game in 2019, where he celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Sonics’ championship alongside former teammates.
His former coach, Lenny Wilkens, remembered him fondly, saying he was always positive and had a great sense of humor. Williams was known for his quickness on the court, making him a one-man fast break.
He played six seasons with the SuperSonics, and they retired his No. 1 jersey in 2004. Before that, he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1975 and had a standout career, averaging 26.7 points during the Sonics’ title run.
Williams was a two-time NBA All-Star and earned the NBA Comeback Player of the Year award after returning from a contract dispute. His legacy in basketball will always be remembered.
