One left winger who has been linked with a move to Chelsea this month is Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.
Chelsea could be forced to spend big on a new wide man, with Mykhailo Mudryk still unavailable for selection.
It has been reported that Chelsea have made contact about signing Alejandro Garnacho, so something could happen soon.
However, the 20-year-old is not the only wide man who is currently being linked to the Blues.
How Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens’ stats compare
Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens is another left winger who is said to be a target for Chelsea.
Earlier this week, it was claimed that Chelsea have been watching £84m-rated Gittens for a while, so he also appears to be an option for them.
This season, Gittens has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 18 league appearances for Dortmund. Garnacho, in contrast, has only managed three and one respectively in 20 outings for United.
Player | Games | Starts | Minutes | Goals | Assists |
Jamie Gittens | 18 | 14 | 1,224 | 7 | 4 |
Alejandro Garnacho | 20 | 11 | 1,121 | 3 | 1 |
It is not only goals and assists where Gittens comes out on top, though. Gittens has been a way more successful dribbler than Garnacho over the last year, while he has also been making more tackles, suggesting that the English youngster is the more effective presser out of the two.
Player | Progressive carries per 90 minutes | Percentile for progressive carries | Successful take-ons per 90 minutes | Percentile for successful take-ons | Tackles per 90 minutes | Percentile for tackles |
Jamie Gittens | 6.20 | 95th | 3.74 | 98th | 1.39 | 67th |
Alejandro Garnacho | 5.86 | 92nd | 1.26 | 33rd | 0.98 | 29th |
Both still 20 years of age, Gittens and Garnacho have a lot of potential, but it is quite clear that the former is performing much better right now.
Chelsea should sign Jamie Gittens instead of Alejandro Garnacho
Gittens looks like he is going to cost fairly more than Garnacho. But if it is a choice between the two for Chelsea, then Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have to buy the Dortmund star.
Again, Gittens is outperforming the club’s other target right now and in some key areas.
Of course, the England U21 international is playing in the Bundesliga, and Chelsea fans have seen first-hand how difficult some imports from German football can find life in the Premier League.
But Gittens looks like he could become something real special, so the Blues really need to try and get their hands on him if they decide to sign a new left winger.
Gittens can envision himself playing in the Premier League, meaning that he may not need too much convincing either.
