Renato Veiga is a major talking point at Chelsea right now, with the defender’s future far from certain.
After failing to cement a place in Enzo Maresca‘s starting XI as a centre-back, it has now been claimed that Veiga is “pushing” for a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
In total, the 21-year-old has made 18 appearances for Chelsea this season, but only two of those have come as a central defender.
While Veiga can play there and in midfield, Maresca has mostly used him at left-back during the current campaign.
Chelsea happy with Renato Veiga’s progress
Chelsea have reportedly named their price for Veiga, so it looks like they are open to selling him this month.
At the same time, though, the Blues look very happy with the progress that he has made since joining from Basel last summer.
According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea believe Veiga’s development has been on track.
With the Portuguese now seemingly unsettled at Stamford Bridge, however, a swift exit appears possible.
Renato Veiga could be another Marc Guehi
Chelsea selling Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace back in 2021 was a mistake. That is now clear as day as the Blues try to re-sign the central defender from their London rivals.
Chelsea are hoping to bring Guehi back to the club after watching Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile pick up injuries.
If they let Veiga go now, in a few years’ time, it would not be a surprise if the Blues were doing the same with him.
At 21, the Portugal international has a lot of potential, just as Guehi did before his Stamford Bridge exit.
Standing at 6’3″, Veiga also has the height to play in the Premier League and in defence. Of course, he is very versatile as well, with Maresca using him as a centre-back, left-back and midfielder this term.
Ultimately, Chelsea letting the former Basel man go could be a big mistake, but his desire for regular game time as a centre-half may leave them with no choice.
