Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman was on target as Atalanta secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Roma in a crucial Serie A clash on Monday night at the Gewiss Stadium.
The Nigerian international, who had been a slight injury doubt ahead of the fixture, shook off any concerns and started the match with purpose.
He made an immediate impact, opening the scoring in the 9th minute with a crisp finish inside the box following a well-timed pass from Charles De Ketelaere.
Lookman showed great composure, turning sharply before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to hand Atalanta an early lead.
It was Lookman’s 15th goal in the Serie A this season and his 20th across all competitions.
The 27-year-old, who recently ended a six-game scoring drought with a goal against Monza, has now registered 20 goals and seven assists in 39 appearances this season one of his most productive campaigns in Europe to date.
Despite their early lead, Atalanta allowed Roma to grow into the game, with the visitors posing threats as the first half wore on.
However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men regained control in the second half and kept pressing for a winner.
Their persistence paid off in the 76th minute when substitute Ibrahim Sulemana found the back of the net to restore the hosts’ lead after Roma had equalised.
The goal ultimately proved decisive as Atalanta held on to claim all three points.
Lookman remained heavily involved throughout the match. He completed 23 of 25 passes with an impressive 92% accuracy and created three key chances for his teammates.
His crossing was also notable, completing three of seven attempts.
The Super Eagles star played the full 90 minutes and was instrumental in helping Atalanta secure Champions League qualification for next season, a major achievement for the club and for Lookman personally in what has been a standout year.
With two league games remaining, Atalanta will be hoping Lookman can maintain this form as they look to finish the season on a high.
