Chelsea’s second Club World Cup group game went from bad to worse in the second half as they fell to their first defeat of the competition.
The Blues were beaten 3-1 by Flamengo, despite Pedro Neto keeping up his good individual form with his second goal of the campaign.
However, they were absolutely blitzed in the second half, conceding three goals and seeing their striker pick up a red card.
Nicolas Jackson had only been on the field for a matter of minutes before he was giving his marching orders for the second time in four games.
Nicolas Jackson ban length revealed after Club World Cup red card
Enzo Maresca will have been left fuming as he subbed off Liam Delap only moments before, leaving him pretty stumped for options in the striking department.
The Englishman is likely to start the next group stage game against ES Tunis due to Jackson’s suspension, however the ban is not as long as many will have feared.
As per Fifa’s official rules, a red card in the competition will only see a player miss one game, as apposed to the Premier League’s ruling of three games.
This is the fate that met Jackson when he was dismissed against Newcastle late in the season, a ban he will be serving during their first Premier League fixture of the new season against Crystal Palace.
Jackson unhappy at Chelsea
Given the fact there is now genuine competition for the number nine spot at Stamford Bridge, Jackson will need to raise his game to keep his place in the starting side.
Reports have claimed that Jackson is unhappy at Chelsea at the moment, and reports that they are considering another new forward will not fill him with joy either.
The Blues have been linked with Hugo Ekitike, however they will need to negotiate the price down that Eintracht Frankfurt are demanding.
While Jackson is unhappy, Maresca will be furious at his striker, and will need to work without him for the now crucial final group game against ES Tunis.
