British High Commission reacts to report on visa restrictions for Nigerians and others for overstaying their visas

The United Kingdom has responded to reports suggesting it may impose visa restrictions on certain nationalities whose citizens are reportedly more likely to overstay their visas.

According to the report, the UK Home Office identified Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka as countries whose nationals frequently overstay and subsequently seek asylum.

The report claimed that citizens from these countries could face tougher conditions when applying for UK work or study visas, as part of efforts to tighten immigration controls.

In reaction, a spokesperson for the British High Commission in Nigeria issued a statement reiterating the UK’s commitment to managing migration responsibly while maintaining its close ties with Nigeria. “We keep our immigration system under constant review to allow legal migration and legitimate travel, while deterring those who may seek to abuse it,” the spokesperson said.

“Our UK and Nigeria people-to-people links are strong and enduring, and we continue to work closely with the Government of Nigeria to tackle irregular migration,” the statement added.

Nigerians have felt the impact of recent UK immigration reforms over the past two years, particularly in relation to student visas and work permits. The increased scrutiny and tightening of immigration rules have prompted many Nigerians to consider alternative destinations, with the United States becoming a notable option. However, the US has also implemented stricter immigration policies. Under former President Donald Trump, visa restrictions were expanded, including warnings that international students with valid visas could face deportation if found not to be serving the country’s best interests.
