Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis dies after breast cancer battle

Ananda Lewis, the beloved former MTV host and television personality, has died at the age of 52 after a six-year battle with stage 4 breast cancer.

Her sister, Lakshmi, announced her passing in an emotional Facebook post on Wednesday, noting that Ananda died peacefully at 11:35 a.m. while in hospice care at her home in Los Angeles. Speaking to TMZ Hip Hop, Lakshmi said Ananda had fought the illness with strength and grace, pursuing a mix of conventional and alternative treatments while remaining in control of her journey.

A prominent figure during MTV’s peak in the late 1990s, Ananda Lewis rose to fame as a charismatic host of shows like Total Request Live (TRL) and Spring Break. Her intelligent and empathetic interview style made her a standout among the network’s “veejays” and later propelled her into daytime television with The Ananda Lewis Show. She also served as a correspondent for several broadcast news outlets and was a longtime advocate for animal welfare, working with the Humane Society.

Ananda publicly disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2020 and revealed in October 2024 that it had advanced to stage 4. She explained that she had declined a mastectomy early in her treatment process, a decision she said she hoped would inspire others to take early detection seriously.

Her death coincided with her 14-year-old son’s graduation from middle school, a day Lakshmi described as “terribly bittersweet.”

In the wake of her passing, numerous celebrities have reportedly reached out to her family, expressing how Ananda influenced their lives and careers. Plans for a memorial are currently underway.

Ananda Lewis leaves behind a legacy of trailblazing media work, advocacy, and an enduring impact on popular culture and journalism.
