A 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist residing in the United States, Ikenna Erinne, has reportedly taken his own life following a child support ruling in favor of his ex-wife.

Born in Anambra State, Dr. Erinne allegedly ended his life on Sunday, January 26, 2025, after enduring a lengthy divorce process that included disputes over child custody.

Reports indicate that he shot himself after a U.S. court mandated that he pay $15,000 monthly in child support to his former spouse.

Clayton Udo, a Nigerian-American who identifies as an expert in psychological and mental abuse, confirmed the tragic event in a Facebook post.

Udo stated that the court’s decision had a devastating financial impact on Dr. Erinne, who also lost his medical license as a result of the ongoing legal battle.

“The plight of African men in the United States must be addressed. In a deeply concerning case, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, a cardiologist trained in America, allegedly took his own life after a court ordered him to pay $15,000 monthly to his ex-wife following a protracted divorce. This heartbreaking incident underscores the systemic challenges within the legal framework that disproportionately impact African men,” he wrote.

He further disclosed that the deceased had incurred significant legal expenses prior to the unfavorable court ruling.

“He shot himself. He spent thousands of dollars on legal fees—money that ultimately went to waste. This is a process that can lead to financial ruin. You enter the courtroom, and they deplete your resources,” he remarked.

“He lost his medical license due to this case, in addition to being burdened with a $15,000 monthly payment and limited access to his children,” he added.

Obim Onujiogu, a member of the Nigerian community in the United States, also confirmed Dr. Erinne’s death in a Facebook post, describing him as a caring healer and a devoted family man.
