Horror plane crash leaves two people dead and ignites a Boxing Day bushfire in Sydney’s outer suburbs as major highway is closed in both directions causing traffic chaos

Two people have died in plane crash that has started a bushfire in dense scrub.

Shortly before 3pm Monday, emergency services responded to reports of a scrub fire in bushland near the vicinity of Appin Road and Colliery Road, south west of Sydney.

Following an extensive search of the area crews located a light plane with two bodies.

A NSW Rural Fire Service helicopter dumps fire suppressant to quell the fire caused by the downed plane

They are yet to be formally identified.

Police have established a crime scene and investigations are ongoing.

Fire crews and a NSW Rural Fire Service helicopter are also at the scene. 

Appin Rd has been closed in both directions between the M1 Princes Motorway and Colliery Rd and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said witnesses believe the crash could have crashed and sparked the bushfire.

Motorists needing to travel between the M1 Princes Motorway and Hume Motorway can use Picton Rd instead.

Earlier police confirmed an aircraft was missing after taking off from the small private Wedderburn Airport.

‘Police will work with Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigators as inquiries into the circumstance surrounding crash continue,’ NSW Police, said.
