Chelsea are wasting their time on £63m striker they nearly signed last year after landing Liam Delap

Chelsea completed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town during the week, but the club still look keen on bringing in another striker.

Despite the acquisition of Delap, Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike is still being linked to Chelsea. The 22-year-old had an impressive 2024/25 campaign, scoring 22 goals in 48 appearances.

Ekitike is not the only centre-forward who is on the Blues’ radar ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

However, at this point, you would have to question whether Enzo Maresca actually needs this other No.9 in his squad.

    Chelsea monitoring Samu Aghehowa

Chelsea came very close to signing Samu Aghehowa from Atletico Madrid last summer before his eventual move to Porto.

A year later, and the Spaniard still appears to be of interest to the Blues. According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are one of several Premier League clubs keeping an eye on Aghehowa‘s situation at Porto.

He will not come cheap, with the same outlet claiming that Porto could demand up to €75m (£63.2m) for his signature.

It is one of two reasons why Chelsea should probably drop their interest in the 21-year-old. The other is the arrival of Delap.

Chelsea no longer need Samu Aghehowa after signing Liam Delap

In Delap and Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea have two young strikers who have so much potential.

Realistically, Maresca’s side will be expected to finish in the top four next season and maybe win another cup. They can achieve that with Delap and Jackson.

And later down the line, when Delap and Jackson have developed into more seasoned forwards, perhaps they will be able to help the team to challenge for the title.

If Chelsea have their heart set on signing another No.9, it would make more sense to recruit an experienced name with a solid track record instead of another Delap or Jackson. Aghehowa is not that.

Last month, it was claimed that Chelsea had enquired about Viktor Gyokeres. He is someone who fits the bill.
