While Chelsea still have the chance to end this season with some silverware, the winner of the final domestic cup in England was determined on Saturday.
Crystal Palace stunned Manchester City with a 1-0 win in the FA Cup final, getting their hands on the trophy for the first time in their club’s history.
This meant that one of the players on loan from the Blues has been part of a cup-winning side, with Ben Chilwell winning the competition.
There is very little belief that Chilwell features in the long-term for Chelsea, with his future something that will need to be sorted during the summer transfer window.
Ben Chilwell makes Chelsea joke straight after Crystal Palace FA Cup final win
Despite not being a regular starter since his switch across London, it was a nice moment for a player who has found minutes hard to come by in recent years.
The defender took to Instagram to celebrate the occasion, referencing the fact that he had finally won the FA Cup after Chelsea were defeated twice in the final during his time there.
He said: “Finally got my hands on the FA Cup. What a group!”
Considering how Chilwell’s last FA Cup final went, it was very much a case of the defender taking care of unfinished personal business.
Chilwell’s FA Cup final heartbreak
The last time the Blues found themselves in the final was in 2021, where they were defeated in similarly shocking circumstances by Leicester City.
With the score at 1-0 going into the final minutes, the Blues thought they had levelled the game when Chilwell bundled the ball home, only for it to be disallowed due to a close offside call.
The irony of this being against his former side was not lost on the Leicester fans, and even though he celebrated a Champions League win just days later, the moment will have stayed in his mind.
Chelsea will be looking to add another trophy to their collection before the season is done when they take on Real Betis in the Conference League final at the end of the month.
