It looks clear to see that Chelsea are planning to upgrade their left wing position before the transfer window comes to an end.
Enzo Maresca confirmed a new player would come in this position, after plenty of attempts were made before the first deadline to complete a signing.
The Blues were pushing hard to sign Jamie Gittens, and even matched Borussia Dortmund’s valuation of the Englishman, however not on the terms that they wanted to facilitate a deal before the Club World Cup.
Chelsea were expected to return for Gittens as soon as the window reopened again, however have now been linked with another top young player in that position.
Jamie Gittens still Chelsea’s priority despite Malick Fofana interest
Malick Fofana has been reported to be of interest to the Blues, putting a spanner in the works when it comes to the business the club are going to do this summer.
However, Fabrizio Romano has stated that Chelsea’s priority is still Gittens, with a deal remaining in place with the player over personal terms.
He said: “Chelsea consider Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as their priority target as winger with talks to follow with BVB, agreement still sealed with player side.
“The club also made an inquiry for Malick Fofana in direct contact with OL, as @hugoguillemet reported. No proposal at this stage.”
There is certainly an argument that Chelsea could sign both options for left-wing, given that they only have three natural wingers currently in their squad.
While there are not many options in the current first team squad at Stamford Bridge, another is set to join the first team squad at the conclusion of the Club World Cup.
Estevao Willian is currently starring for Palmeiras in the United States, and will join Maresca’s squad when the tournament comes to an end with plenty of fanfare.
With some even tipping the Brazilian to go straight into the starting side next season, any new player coming to Stamford Bridge will know they are under pressure for their spot immediately.
With Gittens reportedly very keen on the move though, he will no doubt be up for the challenge should Chelsea choose to bring him in.
