Chelsea fans and supporters of any club do not like seeing their best players depart.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has enjoyed so much success at Chelsea‘s Premier League rivals Liverpool, is starting to find that out.
There has been a bit of backlash among Liverpool’s support following Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave the club this summer.
The defender is set to join Real Madrid, who are also targeting Enzo Fernandez. Unlike Alexander-Arnold, though, the midfielder still has years to run on his contract.
Pat Nevin opens up on Chelsea exit
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin made quite a controversial move himself in the late 80s.
The Blues were relegated at the end of the 1987/88 season and Nevin was eventually sold to Everton. From Chelsea fans’ perspective, the 61-year-old admits he looked like a bit of a “ran”.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club about his Chelsea exit, Nevin said: “I hadn’t explained why I was leaving and they got relegated that season, Chelsea, so it looked like I was the official rat running off the ship, but in reality that’s not what was happening. But I didn’t go out and try and turn the fans against their club, rather than getting a bit miffed with me. I mean, forget that.”
Another footballer who has played in London and on Merseyside is Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian was on Chelsea’s books before joining Liverpool in 2017 after spells at AS Roma and Fiorentina.
Salah was booed by Chelsea supporters as Enzo Maresca‘s men beat Liverpool 3-1 over the weekend, which surprised Nevin.
The 32-year-old will not care too much, though. He has just won his second Premier League title with the Reds, while he has also managed to score 28 goals in the top flight this season.
Pat Nevin makes big Nicolas Jackson claim
Chelsea played Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton before the Reds’ trip to Stamford Bridge, and Nevin spoke about Nicolas Jackson after the game.
Nevin backed the Senegal international to potentially fire Chelsea back into the Champions League, saying: “Chelsea may well just have timed it right after it looked like another season without Champions League football was going to fall through their grasp. The return of Nicolas Jackson to fitness in the nick of time might just see them over the line after his winner against Everton.”
With Chelsea fifth in the Premier League table right now, it is very much possible. And if they finish there, it will be job done, as that was the club’s goal heading into the season.
Their next game in the English top flight is against Newcastle United — a match they cannot afford to lose.
