How Premier League title winner put Filip Jorgensen at ease before Chelsea star’s Denmark debut

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen earned his first cap for Denmark on Saturday after starting in their 2-1 win against Northern Ireland.

Jorgensen was previously part of Denmark’s Under-21 side, but he is now a full international following Brian Riemer’s decision to play him this weekend.

Jorgensen has had a mixed season. While the 23-year-old impressed in the Conference League, he was shaky in the Premier League at times.

Chelsea fans even booed Jorgensen during one game for taking too long on the ball. Bearing that in mind, you would not have blamed him for not being too confident going into Denmark’s match against Northern Ireland, but one of his teammates did their best to support the former Villarreal man.

Kasper Schmeichel urged Filip Jorgensen to be himself

Jorgensen replaced Schmeichel in goal, but the Celtic player was not bitter about it. Instead of complaining about Riemer’s decision to drop him, he focused on helping Jorgensen.

On the advice the 2015/16 Premier League title winner gave him, the Chelsea star said to Bold: “He said that I should just be myself and that I didn’t have to prove anything because everyone knows how good I am after they followed me at Chelsea. It’s great to have him as a teammate.”

Jorgensen will also be hoping to become the Blues’ No.1 next season, but that is unlikely to happen if the club sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan. And there is a good possibility of that happening.

It has been claimed that Chelsea could agree a deal to buy Maignan as early as Monday in what would be a blow for Jorgensen.

If Maignan pushes him out of the squad, Strasbourg could be a potential destination for Jorgensen this summer.

In the end, things turned out well for Jorgensen and the shot-stopper enjoyed his day out with the Denmark national team.

“It was really great and fun to make my debut,” Jorgensen said in the same interview. He later went on to add: “It was great and wonderful for me, and I just hope that it will be many more matches.”

All things considered, 2025 has been a good year for Jorgensen. He managed to get his hands on European silverware after Chelsea’s 4-1 triumph over Real Betis in Poland and is now a Denmark international.
