LaLiga has clinched the second European Performance Spot for next season’s UEFA Champions League, joining the Premier League in sending five clubs to the 2025/26 edition of the competition.
This comes as part of UEFA’s revamped 36-team Champions League format, where two leagues earn extra places based on club performance across all European competitions (UCL, UEL, UECL).
How It Was Secured
England locked in the first EPS on April 8, thanks to consistent performances by its clubs in Europe.
Spain secured the second spot on April 11, aided by:
Lazio’s exit from the Europa League (denting Italy’s coefficient),
Athletic Club’s win over Rangers in the Conference League quarterfinals.
What It Means
In both LaLiga and the Premier League, fifth place will qualify for the Champions League.
In LaLiga, it’s a battle between:
Villarreal (51 pts, one game in hand)
Real Betis (48 pts)
In the Premier League, a race includes:
Newcastle United (59 pts)
Manchester City (58 pts)
Nottingham Forest (57 pts)
Aston Villa (54 pts)
Chelsea (54 pts)
If results align perfectly:
Champions League: Up to 6 teams (top 4 + EPS + UEL winner)
Total European spots: Up to 10 if English teams win UCL and UEL and finish outside qualifying league positions.
For instance:
If Arsenal win the UCL but finish top four, no additional spot is created.
But if Manchester United or Spurs win the UEL and finish outside the top five, they enter as titleholders.
