Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will have been hoping for a settled first team squad and a few new names through the door before they jet off to take part in the Club World Cup.
So far, the Blues have added Liam Delap to their ranks, and convinced him to step away from representing his country this summer at the U21 European Championships to compete in the United States for the Blues.
There are still efforts being made to sign more players before the first deadline strikes tomorrow. Chelsea have bid for Jamie Gittens, and are also looking to secure the services of goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The Frenchman is expected to become the first-choice shot stopper if he does move to Stamford Bridge, meaning at least one of their goalkeepers could be sold.
Manchester City want Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli
One of those who was not expected to be on that list is Marcus Bettinelli, who has established himself as a part of the leadership group in the first team squad.
This is despite never really featuring for the Blues. He has made just one appearance since joining the club as their third-choice goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, Manchester City are plotting a move to bring him to the Etihad, with The Telegraph reporting that they would like Bettinelli to replace the departing Scott Carson.
Despite not making an appearance under the new manager, Bettinelli has been a fan of working under Enzo Maresca over the last 12 months.
Chelsea targeting Manchester City academy stars
Something that has been a theme of Chelsea’s summer transfer targets is the fact that a lot of them have previously been part of the Manchester City academy.
With Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia already at the club, they have already added Delap, and are linked with the signings of Gittens and Morgan Rogers.
City have a clause to receive some of the transfer fees from these completed and potential deals, and will no doubt have considered their own move for them this summer.
They are now looking to get their own back on Chelsea by signing one of the key players behind the scenes at the club, which could impact the mood in the dressing room.
