Chelsea already have a lot of central defenders at the club, yet it is thought that they are interested in bringing in another one.

Enzo Maresca currently has Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile in his squad.

Axel Disasi could be sold to Newcastle United this summer, but until he joins the Magpies or someone else, that is another centre-half the Blues still own.

Whatever the case, Chelsea are still being linked with several centre-backs. However, before they go out and buy one, they may want to take a look at Mamadou Sarr first.

Mamadou Sarr set for Club World Cup opportunity

Chelsea have finally confirmed the signing of Sarr from sister club Strasbourg, with the 19-year-old joining the Conference League winners on an eight-year deal.

It was reported in January that Chelsea had agreed a deal with Strasbourg to sign Sarr, but the Blues have only announced the transfer now.

The reliable Fabrizio Romano has suggested on X that Sarr will be included in Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup.

It is a tournament that will feature some of the biggest clubs in Europe, which is good news for Sarr.

If the Frenchman performs well, then it could persuade Maresca to make him part of his first-team plans for the 2025/26 Premier League season and not sign a new central defender.

Chelsea remain interested in Ajax’s Jorrel Hato, but the young Dutchman is not the only centre-back they are looking at.

Mamadou Sarr can convince Chelsea not to sign Jarrad Branthwaite or Marc Guehi

Chelsea have had Marc Guehi on their radar, but talk about them re-signing the Crystal Palace star has gone quiet.

Chelsea have also been linked with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, who could cost £75m. It is a lot of money to spend, especially when you already have Colwill, Fofana, Adarabioyo, Chalobah, Badiashile and Disasi.

It is now up to Sarr to prove that he is the only centre-half who should be added to Maresca’s squad for the new campaign.
