Nigerian Midfielder, Frank Onyeka is set to return to Brentford at the end of the season following a season-long loan at Bundesliga club Augsburg.
Onyeka, who joined Brentford for a then club-record €10 million in July 2021, was the Bees’ first signing after securing promotion to the English top-flight.
However, in a bid to secure regular first-team football, the FC Midtjylland academy graduate moved to Germany last summer.
The loan to Augsburg was seen as a strategic move, both for Onyeka, who was keen to play consistently, and for Brentford, who wanted to provide more minutes to their emerging midfielders.
While the Nigerian has thrived in Germany, featuring in 28 league games so far and starting 27 of them, Augsburg are not planning to make the deal permanent.
According to Sky Sport Germany’s transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, there have been no discussions between the two clubs about extending Onyeka’s stay in the Bundesliga.
Onyeka has made a solid contribution to Augsburg’s campaign, providing energy and steel in midfield, along with two goal involvements.
His efforts have helped the club climb to 11th on the league table, and they are now close to hitting the 40-point safety mark a historically reliable threshold to avoid relegation.
The 26-year-old midfielder signed a new four-year contract with Brentford in 2023, with an option for a further year.
With his loan set to expire at the end of the current season, he is expected to report back to the Gtech Community Stadium for pre-season.
Brentford, are currently 12th in the Premier League with 42 points from 31 games, a position that all but confirms their place in the top flight for another season.
What comes next for Onyeka a role in Brentford’s midfield plans or another loan move remains to be seen.
