One of the biggest surprises of the January transfer window was one Chelsea star demanding his exit from the club just months after joining in the first place.
Renato Veiga made it clear he wanted out during the winter, after not being given enough opportunities to play at the heart of defence.
The Portuguese international moved to Juventus, where he became a key member of their defence. Italian media were very impressed by Veiga, however talk of a permanent deal has not continued.
Veiga is wanted by European clubs, however there may have been an appetite to keep hold of him due to Enzo Maresca’s personal admiration of him.
Chelsea target £40m Renato Veiga replacement
It looks as if the move could be on though, with TalkSPORT reporting that he could be moved on if the Blues land one of their targets this summer.
The piece goes on to say that Chelsea have opened talks with Ajax over the potential signing of Jorrel Hato.
Chelsea are reportedly focused on Hato after sealing a deal to sign Liam Delap in the first few days of the summer window.
Hato admitted that he should stay at Ajax back in January in order to further his development. Despite making plenty of appearances, he is still only 19 years of age.
Chelsea have ‘good chance’ of signing Hato
The Blues are not the only top club to be interested in signing the Dutchman this summer. However, Chelsea have ‘a good chance’ to pip Arsenal to Hato.
Given how promising the youngster has already proven to be, the deal is not likely to come cheap.
According to CaughtOffside, the defender may cost a fee of around £40m to any interested clubs, a fee which is more than double what they paid for Veiga 12 months ago.
The Blues currently only have Marc Cucurella as a senior option at left-back, and this is one of two positions he excels in.
Similarly to Veiga, Hato has plenty of experience playing at the heart of defence, which would certainly be appealing to Maresca as he looks to replace the former Basel man.
