It has taken some time for some of Chelsea’s signings to make a real impact at Stamford Bridge.

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have spent big on the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and Marc Cucurella.

Caicedo has just won two awards for his performances this season, but the Ecuadorian got off to a slow start in west London.

The same can also be said about Cucurella, but the pair are now easily two of Chelsea’s most important players.

Scott Minto praises Marc Cucurella for turning Chelsea career around

Cucurella really had it hard when he first joined Chelsea, even being booed at one stage as he struggled on the pitch.

However, former Chelsea defender Scott Minto has now suggested that the Blues cannot live without him and thinks he has really turned a corner at Stamford Bridge.

Discussing Cucurella on talkSPORT following Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Liverpool, Minto said: “Something happens when he’s in the side. When things weren’t going well through that run, he was one of the very few players who was making something happen either from left-back or going into inverted midfield or almost playing like a flying winger.

“He scores goals as well and he’s only small and sometimes with his head. Something happens when he’s on the pitch, and it’s one of those where if you’re an opposition fan or player, he probably is an annoying little so-and-so, but you love him being on your side. And do you know what? I really respect him as well for how tough it was at the start of his Chelsea career. He’s turned it around for both the club and country.”

Minto is not the only person who has been impressed with the left-back this season. Brentford manager Thomas Frank had some praise for Cucurella as well after his side’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea last month.

While neither side were able to score that day, Cucurella was actually able to net in the reverse fixture, helping Chelsea to win 2-1.

Marc Cucurella’s attacking numbers

As Minto touched on, Cucurella has been really good going forward. In all competitions this season, the Spaniard has scored six goals, while he has also managed to record four assists.

Marc Cucurella’s 2024/25 stats Appearances Goals Assists
Premier League 33 4 2
Conference League 7 2 1
FA Cup 2 0 1
EFL Cup 1 0 0
Total 43 6 4

Without him, Chelsea would be in a much worse place. Enzo Maresca is very fortunate that Cucurella has not picked up any serious injuries, as the club’s other left-backs, Renato Veiga and Ben Chilwell, are out on loan.

All in all, Cucurella has had a fantastic season, flourishing in Chelsea’s defence and midfield as an inverted full-back. After a disappointing start to life as a Chelsea player, the Spain international really has turned things around.
